Happy New Year! Thanks to everyone who brought in the New Year with us at the Departure Lounge - it was a great night. I particularly enjoyed the hundreds of people bawling out the words and jumping around manically to the ska choruses at the end of Auld Lang Syne. It was a great way to start off the year of Rabbie Burn’s 250th birthday. It’s almost as if everyone had been drinking heavily…
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the water - or indeed that you had resolved that would be all you would drink for ever - can we urge you to delay that particular resolution by another day? We are playing on Saturday (3rd Jan) at the tremendous Saturday Night Fish Fry. We’ll be going on at 1am (technically, that’s Sunday, I know) and playing for an hour and 15 as usual. This is a great chance to delay the onset of January blues. Dig out your best dancing face and resolve to make 2009 the year of the party!

The Drawing Room Sessions’ – a fitting name considering the surroundings. Thanks to everyone at the Graffiti Project (Kelburn Castle) for such a wonderful evening of music and food. I tried my best not to drop a stick during the proceedings so as not to give Moose the excuse to look at me with ‘where’s the beat’ in his eyes.
One of the best reactions I could hope for as a drummer in a groove trio is to see the crowd dancing. I was not disappointed at this gig. Thanks to everyone who shook their toosh and sang along with the band.
Also, a round of applause to David Donnelly and Pip Burnett who also played some great tunes on the night.

I’ll keep this short and sweet because if I write much more I’m likely to break into full rant, given that some kind people nicked about 55 massive slate floor tiles from outside my door last night.  Thanks guys.

Anyway, if you are interested, there is a (wobbly) video clip from our support slot for Nizlopi up on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh82lu_9Eng   Enjoy.  And by the way, thanks to those of you who made it to Kelburn Castle last weekend.  It was a great gig with a lovely, friendly vibe.

Right.  I’ve been nice… I’m off to gnash my teeth and swear in a corner.  If anyone offers you 11 boxes of slate floor tiles, let me know…

Sorry to say that our gig at 80 Queen Street this weekend (Saturday 25th) has now been cancelled due to the apparent closure of the venue.  We apologise if you had made plans to come and see us.

The positive hits just keep on coming.  How many hits? ‘More hits than Barry Bonds playing slow pitch in the disabled seniors league,’ as Abdominal would put it.  Gecko 3 are delighted to announce that we will be playing the midnight set at the Departure Lounge Hogmanay party.  The event also features live sets from Orkestra del Sol and Mungo’s HiFi plus DJ Astroboy and others.

So, it seems that our big November support slot has now been confirmed!  We’re supporting The Five Corners Quintet (www.thefivecornersquintet.com) on Sunday November 16th, 8pm, in the Voodoo Rooms.  Since this is also the Moose’s birthday, and we may get a chance to play some of the jazzier numbers (which means my new guitar ‘Mr Wibble’ can make an outing and Hugh’s new cymbal - more of a tong than a ting - can be played), plus it’s one of Hugh’s favourite bands… you’d be a hard hearted individual not to be excited!

And we’re supporting Nizlopi (www.nizlopi.com) this Tuesday evening in Caberet Voltaire at 7pm!  Damn!

I don’t think I’ve ever used so many exclamation marks in one post!   …!

Well - a few months since our last post and I’m thinking we’ve not embraced this Web 2.0 thing with enough aplomb…
Hugh’s seasonal fruits aside, we have actually been quite busy. You may have noticed our new blog! Other than a much needed revamp, this one makes it really easy for Marty to upload photos so no more excuses there…

Not sure what happened with the dates though as our most recent trip to Europe was at the end of May, not Feb.
We had such a good time and met some great people. Each gig was magical for it’s own reasons. I’ll just nudge Marty to give you the lowdown as he’s the words man…

We’ve recovered from the Edinburgh Fringe - a big thanks to all of you who stayed up to see our Fringe Jazz Bar gig on Aug 16th. We were supposed to be on stage at 2am but when it came to the usual Marty & me standing on stage ready to go with still no sign of Hugh at 1.50am I decided to nip out and give him a call…

Ring ring…
Ring ring…

(checks watch)
Ring ring…
“hellooo!”
“Hugh?”
“……..”
“….er…..Yes.”

“How you doing?”
“I’m just…. on my way out the door”
“You just had a wee nap?”
“…………”
“……….ahm, I diiid just have a little nap yes but my cars just outside”

“uh huh - we are actually on stage in 5 minutes”
“yes, yes, no problem, no problem at all…. I’m on my way, on my way”
“Looking forward to it”
“see you soon, yes - I’ll be there in 5″

So after Marty & I’s usual “not like us to be waiting for Hugh” conversation, followed by Hugh’s eventual (and signature) Grand Entrance with handshakes, hugs and kisses we finally get going around 2.30am. Fortunately Erik da Viking had some amazing vinyl up his sleeve.

It was a sweaty one but good to see you all there and good to play with Rob “musketball” Ironside on Alto sax once again.

We did an Acoustic Edinburgh special event as a Fringe preview with the incredible Nell Bryden who’s gone from girl with guitar busking around the UK to supporting Counting Crows on tour within the space of (a very hard working) 2 years. She’s got an amazing voice so check her out.

Also we’ve just done our first gig in Perth at the Twa Tams alongside the Douglas Kay Band. Good to spread our wings again. Particularly since lizards don’t have wings.

Plans are underfoot for our debut album release which is likely to be next June. Most of the recording’s in the bag already but we’re wanting to do this one properly so stay tuned.

So tonight, we’re all heading out for a bit of a jam session at 80 Queen Street, Edinburgh. We’ll be performing as “Organogel” (a name inspired by our collaborative Tenor sax player Steve “the ear” Meeker’s former research job) and playing some 1970’s instrumental grooves. Should be a lot of fun as we’ve not played those tunes for a long time and we’ll be joined by JB Richon (keys) and Rob Ironside again on sax.

May be see you there!
