If the pleasure of finally playing another gig with our pals Amplifico in a tiny, intimate venue wasn’t enough, we’ve taken the spirit of collaboration and mutual admiration (MCS) to new heights and put a wee CD together of each other’s tunes!
Donna called a couple of weeks ago with the great idea that we record a cover of one of their songs and vice versa as a one-off gimmick for our gig in Henry’s. Off we went to the wee studio the ‘fico are recording their album at in Fife and spent a hilarious day getting our efforts to hard disk.
Of course, we did the sensible thing and went out to a party until 6 in the morning so that we were nice and fresh for the 9.30am start… As a result of our tiredness, you may detect a slight slowing of tempo during our version of “All Your Sins”…
Amplifico‘s cover of “Donkeys and Elephants” is amazing. Neither band had any idea how the other band would interpret the songs until the tape was rolling and it was so interesting to hear the various individual and collective musical trademarks from the ‘fico. We kind of realised our own style came through too which is something you don’t really think about when you’re so close to your own material and simply writing.
It was such a fun and interesting project that we’d recommend any pairing of bands who know and respect each others work to do it. This was so cool for us because although Amplifico and we have followed and loved each others music since the days of previous incarnations of the ‘fico, stylistically we’re totally different.
There could be a spotlight on the Edinburgh music scene album project on startup here!
Anyhow – the fruits of our hungover labour will be available exclusively at saturday’s gig in Henry’s! All the more reason to get to Ripping Records and snap up the last few tickets if you’re not too late! See you there…
